One of the most beautiful releases of the week comes courtesy of LA singer, songwriter and wellness advocate little luna.
Her timelessly elegant new single ‘under the wave’ is a subtly whimsical yet ethereal take on folk-pop that chronicles her fluctuating state of mind during meditation.
“This song, to me, is about how I feel in meditation. Sometimes my mind present and floating, Sometimes my thoughts tossing me around.”
Taken from the debut EP ‘through the self‘, which is out 29th April 2022 via AWAL Recordings.
Neil Young’s Harvest turned 50 this month — and thanks to hits like “Heart of Gold” and “Old Man,” the 1972 LP remains one of the songwriter’s signature efforts. It sold in the millions and made Young a bona fide solo superstar, an experience that caused him to head for what he famously called “the ditch”; the albums that followed included Time Fades Away, On The Beach and Tonight’s The Night. But despite its blockbuster status, Harvest is darker, deeper and weirder than you might remember. To hear it with fresh ears, step into the barn with Neil one more time and check out this decades-spanning, re-imagined version of the album, compiled out of ranch rambles, live arrangements, fireside sessions, and even a little chicken coop jam. | t wilcox
Out On The Weekend (Ranch Recording, 1971) ++ Harvest (Chicken Coop Session, 2020) ++ Man Needs A Maid (Boulder 1976) ++ Heart of Gold (Birmingham 1987) ++ Are You Ready For The Country (San Francisco 1975) ++ Old Man (San Jose 1984) ++ There’s A World (Omemee 2017) ++ Alabama (Indio 2016) ++ Needle and the Damage Done (Barrie 1996) ++ Words (Fireside Session 2020 / Madrid 2008)
In a series of interviews with Tone Glow’s Joshua Minsoo Kim, Eiko Ishibashi and Jim O’Rourke shared why they watch Law & Order each night while cooking dinner. “I love how the show always has the same structure, how the first half is about pursuing the criminal and the second half is about how they’re gonna get him in jail,” she explained, and it’s easy to understand how the procedural crime drama offered a comforting sense of predictability during the pandemic. Ishibashi’s favorite character, Jack McCoy—played by Sam Waterston from 1994 until the series’ finale in 2010, and returning soon—became such a constant presence in their kitchen that she decided to dedicate an album to the densely eyebrowed district attorney, using music to imagine the offscreen events of his personal life.

For McCoy was initially self-released on Bandcamp in March 2021, and has now received a vinyl edition from Black Truffle with a new mix from O’Rourke. In the album’s original version, its primary suite “I can feel guilty about anything” sprawled across 35 minutes with the sparse opening fanfare of flutes descending into ominous electronic tones and ghostly hints of jazz. The album’s new mix uses the LP sides to split this piece in two, making the sudden appearance of Ishibashi’s vaporous vocals in its second half seem even more astonishing. For McCoyconcludes with the relatively brief “Ask me how I sleep at night,” neatly tying its sonic strands together with a noir-jazz double bass groove from O’Rourke and drummer Tatsuhisa Yamamoto. As the now familiar flute melody returns, it feels like watching McCoy bringing this episode’s case to a close, exactly how it was expected.

Ishibashi takes a similarly circuitous route on her score for Drive My Car, director Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s extended cinematic adaptation of a short story by Haruki Murakami. The slow-moving meditation on grief revolves around a multilingual production of Chekov’s Uncle Vanya, but its most important scenes take place in a red Saab 900 Turbo darting across the countryside surrounding Hiroshima. Sampling the sounds of a clicking cassette or the hum of the highway, Ishibashi conjures the daily commutes of a depressed theatre actor and his young chauffeur, repeatedly drifting through different versions of the same two songs. Ishibashi and O’Rourke each play an array of instruments, with Tatsuhisa Yamamoto back on softly brushed drums, and Atsuko Hatano’s sweeping strings providing some of the most transportative moments.
The music of Drive My Car is undoubtedly poppier and more predictable than For McCoy, but both works highlight the intimate bonds formed through repetition. By cruising the same roads every day (or watching endless episodes of Law & Order) it can be possible to discover changes in our companions, and eventually, hopefully, in ourselves.

Culled from a 1970 documentary created for a segment of the Black Journal television program, this unearthed 16mm color film finds between the albums Huntington Ashram Monastery, and Ptah, the El Daoud.
Captured three years after the death of John Coltrane, the piece begins in media res outside the Long Island, NY home the artist shared with her late husband and children. In a floating voiceover, Coltrane reflects on matters of the spiritual and beyond, as we catch a glimpse of the family’s domestic life on the property. A scant yet powerful fifteen minutes, things soon turn to music as the film shifts to a grip of rare, live footage of Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders getting free in performance. Highly recommended.
Last year, Trans-Siberian Orchestra was forced to cancel its signature annual project — the holiday tour of U.S. arenas that typically draws more than 1 million fans.
To help fill the void, the TSO team put together a livestream concert. Scaling the show from an arena where TSO deploys a spectacular light show and all manner of pyrotechnics and special effects to something that works on a TV or computer screen was a challenge, but the livestream, which featured the 1996 “Christmas Eve and Other Stories” album, went over well.
And in a way, the livestream took TSO back to its beginnings, before founder/songwriter, the late Paul O’Neill, was financially able to create the visual concert extravaganza fans now know and love. The livestream also revealed an important truth to Al Pitrelli and Jeff Plate, the musical directors for TSO’s two touring ensembles.
“If you go back to our first show in ’99, Jeff and I, I think we had, I don’t know, seven or eight cities on the tour,” Pitreilli says.
“We had a box truck, two buses and a fog machine. The curtain came up, the lights went down, and we played the songs from top to bottom. It wasn’t the sensory overload that it grew up to be. It was a beautifully written story that Paul O’Neill put pen to paper back in ‘95, and we started recording in ‘96. The people fell in love with the characters. They fell in love with the story. They fell in love with the sentiment of it. Because at the end of the day, at the center of Paul’s story is about missing somebody, and everybody misses somebody, especially around the holidays.
“I think during the livestream, it showed me, in particular, two things,” he says. “One is that people, they love the story. It didn’t have all the special effects. There’s no physical way we could do that. But the band played amazing. The singers brought the characters to life. I heard after the fact that we sold almost 250,000 of those things. From a financial standpoint, I could care less. It didn’t matter to me. What really made me emotional is that people wanted their tradition. Albeit virtually, we were all joined together.”
Now, Pitrelli and Plate are taking the two touring ensembles of TSO back to arenas across the country. Knowing fans will turn out en masse for the shows continues to leave Pitrelli and Plate feeling surprised and gratified. After all, when O’Neill founded the project, he envisioned something entirely new and unproven in contemporary music.
For one thing, TSO would combine a rock band with an orchestra playing concept albums/rock operas with cohesive story lines. Instead of building an image around a singer, guitarist or conductor, the ensemble would use multiple singers and a range of instrumentalists who would remain largely anonymous to listeners. How to market the group was a big question. The albums would require big budgets, and to be financially viable, the tours would need to play arenas from the start — something no music act had done.
Nevertheless, Atlantic Records got on board with O’Neill’s vision and signed TSO. The label has been rewarded as the trilogy of Christmas albums became hits that continue to rack up new sales every holiday season.
The first release was “Christmas Eve and Other Stories.” Spurred by the hit single “Christmas Eve Sarajevo 12/24,” it has sold 3 million copies. The other two holiday rock operas that make up TSO’s Christmas trilogy — “The Christmas Attic” (1998) and “The Lost Christmas Eve” (2004) — have topped 2 million copies sold. In addition, the group has released a Christmas EP, 2012’s “Dreams of Fireflies (On A Christmas Night),” and three full-length non-holiday rock operas — “Beethoven’s Last Night” (2000), “Night Castle” (2009) and “Letters from the Labyrinth” (2015). In all, the group’s CDs and DVDs have sold more than 12 million copies and the Christmas tour plays to 1 million fans each year.
This year, as in 2019, TSO’s show will feature the “Christmas Eve and Other Stories” album as a first set, followed by a selection of other material in the second set. That 1996 debut album was played for a dozen years when TSO started touring, then was set aside to feature the other albums in the Christmas trilogy on subsequent tours. Bringing back the album that began the TSO journey has been special for Pitrelli and Plate.
“Yes, this is my favorite show,” said Plate, who joined Pitrelli for the teleconference. “I’ve said all along, I think this story is really the star of the show. This is what kept bringing people back every year was when people connected with the story and realized it’s about them. It’s about everybody. This is just how people, just word of mouth, kept coming back. These audiences kept building every year. This (was) our first venture with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, ‘Christmas Eve and Other Stories,’ so this has a lot of meaning. It’s very special for all of us. The songs, the story, (everything) about it, I think is fantastic.”
